Smart Home Installation in Visalia & Tulare County

Smart home installation around Visalia and Tulare County: smart switches, PoE security cameras, Cat6 network cabling, Wi-Fi access points, video doorbells, and surge protection. One crew runs the low-voltage cable and the 120V circuits behind it.

Written by Cen Cal Electricians, Visalia, CA. Updated . How we write these pages

What we do

  • Smart switches and dimmers, with neutrals added where boxes lack them
  • Security camera installation with PoE cabling
  • Video doorbell wiring and transformer upgrades
  • Network cabling installation: Cat6 data cabling to TVs, desks, and rooms
  • Wi-Fi access point wiring with PoE power
  • Structured wiring panels and network closets
  • Whole-home surge protection at the main panel
  • Smart panel installation with circuit-level monitoring
  • Home automation installation for lights, sensors, and hubs
  • New 120V outlets and circuits for devices

Signs your smart home needs wiring

  • Smart switches will not install because the box has no neutral.
  • Wi-Fi drops in back rooms, the garage, or the yard.
  • Battery cameras die often or lose their link to the router.
  • A new video doorbell reboots, or the chime hums.
  • Power strips and extension cords feed your electronics.
  • Electronics failed after a storm or a power flicker.

How the job goes

  1. List your devices

Tap Get help now and list the devices you own or plan to buy, plus the rooms where Wi-Fi drops. Photos of a switch box and your panel help us plan.

  2. Walkthrough and plan

We walk the house and check switch boxes for neutrals. We map cable routes through the attic and pick a central spot for the network gear.

  3. Cable runs and circuits

We pull Cat6 to each camera, access point, and jack. We add neutrals or new circuits where needed and pull the permit for line-voltage work.

  4. Install and connect

We mount devices, terminate and test every cable, and add panel surge protection if it is in the plan. Then we pair each device with your app.

  5. Label and hand off

We label each cable at both ends and give you a map of the runs. Future changes and repairs go faster with it.

What changes the price

Every bid starts with a look at the site. These are the things that move the number.

  • The number of cable runs drives labor. Each camera, access point, and wall jack is its own run.
  • Access matters. Single-story homes with open attics are quicker than two-story homes and finished ceilings.
  • Switch boxes without a neutral need new cable before most smart switches will work.
  • Outdoor-rated and direct-burial cable costs more than indoor Cat6.
  • A structured wiring panel, a smart panel, or new 120V circuits add parts and permit work.
  • Runs to a detached shop or barn may need fiber or buried conduit.

Notes for the Central Valley

  1. Many Valley homes sit on slab foundations, so cable runs go through the attic and down the walls. Summer attic heat limits how long a crew can work up there.

  2. Cameras on south- and west-facing walls take hard afternoon sun. We check each camera's temperature rating and look for shaded mounts.

  3. Rural properties often need cameras at a shop or barn past Ethernet's 328-foot limit. Fiber or a wireless bridge covers the distance.

  4. The California Electrical Code calls for a surge protective device when a home's service equipment is installed or replaced. We include one when we replace a service.

  5. New 120V circuits and panel work need a permit, usually from the city inside city limits and from the county outside them. We tell you which parts of your job need one.

Where we do this work

We take this work within about 60 miles of Visalia, in towns such as Visalia, Farmersville, Tulare, Dinuba, Woodlake, and Lindsay. Each town page names the permit office and the utility, and lists other local shops. See every town.

Questions people ask

How much does smart home installation cost?

It depends on the number of cable runs, the access, and the devices. A few smart switches in boxes that already have neutrals is a small job. Wiring cameras, access points, and a network panel through a two-story house is a larger one. We price it after a walkthrough.

Do smart switches need a neutral wire?

Most do. Many older homes have no neutral in the switch box, so the switch cannot power its radio. We can run a neutral, or you can choose a no-neutral model rated for your lights. We check each box before you buy, so the switches you order fit.

Should I choose wired or wireless security cameras?

Choose wired PoE cameras for the outside of the house. One Cat6 cable carries power and video, so there are no batteries to charge and no weak Wi-Fi link. Wireless cameras are quicker to place but depend on signal strength and battery life. They suit spots a cable cannot reach.

Do I need a low voltage contractor or an electrician?

In California, a C-7 low voltage contractor or a C-10 electrical contractor can run low-voltage cable. A C-10 can also add the 120V outlets, circuits, and panel surge protection that smart devices need. One contractor for both parts means one schedule. Check any contractor's license class on the CSLB website.

Is whole-home surge protection worth it?

For a home full of electronics and smart devices, it adds a useful layer of protection. A surge protective device at the panel limits voltage spikes that come in on the utility line. It does less for spikes made inside the house, so add plug-in surge strips at TVs and computers too.

Can I install a video doorbell myself?

Often yes, if your doorbell wiring and transformer meet the doorbell's power needs. Many older transformers are too weak, which causes reboots and a humming chime. The transformer usually connects to 120V at a junction box or the panel. Call an electrician for that part.

How do I fix weak Wi-Fi in parts of my house?

Wire access points with Ethernet. A ceiling access point on a Cat6 run, powered by PoE, covers back rooms, the garage, and the yard. Wired access points are steadier than mesh units that relay signal over the air. We run the cable and mount the access points.
